Essay: Abuse of Alcohol in Australia

Nowadays, alcohol abuse is a widely discussed topic in Australia due to the serious risk factors and health concerns which accompany. These concerns are not only limited to those addicted, but have a wider impact on their families, bystanders, and the overall society. Hence, the purpose of this essay will be to highlight and review the causes and effects of abuse of alcohol, and identify significant statistics relating to the problem in Australia today.

According to various statistics, most Australians partake in alcohol based drinks in casual or formal circumstances. Furthermore, alcohol holds different meanings based on the specific cultural or social context. Drinking alcohol socially or as a part of religious observance/cultural requirement can also often escalate into drinking as a result of peer pressure, for pleasure, mood alteration, intoxication, habit, relaxation, to overcome inhibitions, to escape from specific issues etc.

A Household Survey conducted by the National Drug Strategy in 2013 indicated that from 2010 to 2013, daily drinking for both men and women significantly declined, falling by almost 0.7 percent to an all-time low last observed in 1991. Furthermore, the report also identified that there was a significant increase in the number of individuals who had never consumed over the recommended dosage – from 12.1 to 13.8 percent. The survey also found that abstinence among underage individuals (from 12 to 17 years of age) increased by over 8 percent in just three years. Additionally, the age at which individuals started drinking has also significantly decreased since 1998.

Furthermore, another study by Livingston in 2015 reported that within the past thirteen years, young people aged 25 and under have considerably reduced their drinking due to changes in culture and the passage of abstaining teenagers into adulthood. Nevertheless, the study also suggested that adults over 40 have shown signs of heavy drinking in a 13 year period due to which it is recommended that public health advocates and policy/prevention campaigns should more on older adults as well as on the younger generation.

Overall, this short essay contains an overview of the statistics relating to alcohol consumption in Australia, however, a review of the factors driving this change or decline needs to be conducted by academics and scholars so as to boost their presence in order to ensure that alcohol consumption remains low within the country amongst youngsters. Furthermore, such a review can also provide information on how to reduce alcohol consumption within older adults as well.
